How to Prepare for your Photoshoot
Booking a photo session is exciting, but it’s completely normal to wonder how to prepare. A little planning can make a huge difference in how relaxed, confident, and beautiful you feel in front of the camera!
Here are a few simple things you can do before your session to make sure everything goes smoothly.
Plan Your Outfits Ahead of Time
Choose outfits a few days before your session so you’re not rushing at the last minute.
A few tips that photograph beautifully:
-Stick with neutral or soft tones
-Coordinate colors instead of matching exactly
-Avoid large logos or busy patterns but if that is your thing, go for it!
-Choose clothes you feel comfortable and confident in
If it’s a family session, lay everyone’s outfits together so you can see how the colors work.
Get Your Nails Done
Your hands appear in photos more often than people realize—holding your partner, fixing your child’s hair, or gently resting on your face.
Fresh nails make a big difference.
Great options include:
-Neutral colors
-Soft pinks
-French manicure
-Clean, natural nails
Avoid chipped polish or very dark colors if you want a timeless look.
Hydrate and Rest
Drink plenty of water the day before and try to get a good night’s sleep. Hydrated skin and rested eyes help you look fresh and glowing in photos.
Schedule Hair and Grooming
If you plan to get a haircut, color, or beard trim, schedule it about a week before your session so it looks natural. For hair styling the day of your shoot:
-Soft waves photograph beautifully
-Avoid trying a completely new style
Keep Makeup Natural and Slightly Elevated
Makeup tends to photograph softer than it appears in person. A little more definition can help:
-Light foundation
-Defined brows
-Soft blush
-Neutral lip color
The goal is to look like the best version of yourself. Always wear your makeup the way you feel most confident in. Try to avoid experimenting with makeup styles you aren't used to the day of your photoshoot. If you don't feel confident, the camera can tell.
Check for Pet Hair
If you have pets at home, give your clothing a quick check before leaving for your session. Pet hair can show up in photos—especially on darker clothing—so it helps to:
-Use a lint roller before you leave
-Keep outfits hanging up until you head out
-Bring a small lint roller with you just in case
It’s a simple step that can keep your photos looking polished.
Don’t Stress About the Kids
If you’re bringing children, don’t worry about perfect behavior. Kids are kids, and some of the most beautiful moments come from genuine laughter, curiosity, and connection. Your photographer will guide the session and capture those natural moments.
Trust the Process
You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. Your photographer will guide you through everything. The most important thing you can bring to your session is simply yourself and the people you love.
Relax, have fun, and let the moments unfold naturally!
